All told, Popular Mechanic's machine has more than $5,000 in parts. That includes 1.5TB of storage, a blu-ray drive 7.1-channel surround sound speakers and a $650 Silverstone case with a touch-screen display.

Building one of these is not for the faint of heart. In order to get the touch screen display to work, you need to install Windows XP tablet features onto your copy of Windows XP Media Center. I'll be curious to see if Windows Vista works out of the box with high end cases like this.

Oh yeah, and Popular Mechanics is holding a contest to give this box away.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

We have a winner

Congratulations to Scott Ellison, winner of our TiVo Swag Bag contest!

For taking the time to write in the comments section, Scott now gets to show his true colors (Orange and umm.. silver I guess?) to his friends, family, and anyone who will take the time to glance at him as he walks down the street with this bright bag.

And while we're on the topic of orange (and because this post feels awfully short), check out TV Squad for a great list of Halloween-themed programs running Oct 31st and Nov 1st. If you have the space on your hard drive, you can record almost enough programming in a 24 hour period to watch one Halloween or horror-related movie or TV show a day for the next year. Take one taste and you'll see the whole world in 1080p.*

All you have to do is check out our original post from Friday, and leave a message in the comments section telling us what's your favorite post from the month of October. All entries must be in by 5:00 this Friday. One entry per person, and no AOL or Weblogs Inc. staff or freelancers are eligible.

We'll announce the winner sometime next week.

*Unless you already have any form of visual impairment. In fact, I wear glasses and I'm pretty sure I can still see more pixels than would fit on a 1080p screen, so for legal purposes, I'm going to say that this asterisk voids any real commitment to upgrade/downgrade your vision after tasting a mint.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

PVR Wire contest: TiVo swag bag

I trekked up to New York for Digital Life, and all I got was this bag of goodies from TiVo. But what's mine is yours -- or at least, it could be.

Here's the deal. Up for grabs we have a package including:

1 pretty nifty TiVo bag/backpack

1 TiVo plush toy (good for kids, sticking in your cubicle, or watching your dog chew apart)

1 TiVo KidZone lanyard

1 tin of TiVo HD mints (in case you're tired of standard definition mints)

Sounds great, right? But I bet you're asking "how do I win such a fabulous prize?"

Easy, all you have to do is review the site and pick your favorite post from the month of October, then leave a message in the comments section for this post. In a week or two we'll randomly select a winner from the entries and send you the swag bag stuffed with plunders from the TiVo booth at Digital Life.

Fine print: Only one entry per person, Weblogs Inc. freelance staff and AOL employees are not eligible. There can be only one (winner), and our decision is final. All entries must be submitted by 5:00PM Friday, October 20th.

PVR Wire accepts no responsibility for the quality of the prize or problems with the mail/delivery service. Winners must supply a valid email address so we can contact you. Your email will not be visible to other PVR Wire readers.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Netflix challenge update

Just a week after Netflix announced a million dollar prize for anyone who could come up with a better system for recommending movies to users based on their past rental patterns, more than 8-thousand teams have signed up.

And as of this morning, three of them have already come up with programs that are more reliable than Netflix. The $1 million prize only goes to a team that can improve Netflix's system by 10% or more, and nobody's achieved that goal yet. But it has only been a week.

I'm guessing most of the programmers at Netflix don't earn anywhere near $1 million a year. So either this contest demonstrates that "crowdsourcing" your work will result in the best and the brightest coming together to make a better product, or you just need to pay your programmers better if you want them to produce. I'm going to go with the first one for now, I'm feeling like an optimist today.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Grab yourself a SlingBox AV at Engadget

Fancy getting your hands on a new SlingBox AV?

Sure you do - you want to be able to check out content on your PVR when you're on the move.

Why not nip over to our big brother blog, Engadget, and leave them a comment telling them what kind of PVR you're currently using (ie. the PVR you would hook the SlingBox into) and they'll pick a winner at random.
