Remember a time when Sony dominated the portable music market with the Sony Walkman. Now instead of walkman being a household name it is the Apple iPod, but Sony intends to reclaim its lost market share.Last Thursday Sony announced that it will be developing a range of new Sony Video Walkmans, although specific details were thin on the ground.
Sony has already produced a beefy commercial portable video recorder, the Sony DVCam, and the consumer targeted Sony Mylo portable media player.
But Sony wants to really increase its market share in the portable devices market and take back the market share it lost to Apple.
Sony Senior Vice President Hiroshi Yoshioka didn't reveal very much about the new plans simply stating "We are developing a product that handles images, but I cannot make any comment on specific plans."
Sony will also be up against heavy competition from the Microsoft Zune, so increasing its market share in an already saturated market is going to be difficult.
